A Case Study on Play Therapy for a Child with Autistic and Attachment Problems

Abstract
This case study examines the procedures of mitigating developmental delay of a 6-year-old girl with autistic and attachment problems. Individual play therapy was administered to reduce autistic features, facilitate interactions, and stabilize attachment relationship between the child and her mother. The child lacked in socioemotional, cognitive, and communication skills. Therefore, the therapist focused on establishing a stable relationship with the child and recovering her basic confidence by providing supportive affection at the early stage of sessions. In order to improve relations between he child and her mother, the mother was also treated with counseling. The middle stage of the therapy concentrated on enhancing abilities of establishing relations through an interactive play therapy focused on communications and representations. At the final stage, the therapist intervened and worked with her parents to facilitate changes of the child. Major problems of the child were eased, which was verified by pre- and post-test results.
